Tour du Quadraro

Tour du Quadraro, Medieval tower in Quadraro district, Rome, Italy

Description

The Torre del Quadraro is a quadrangular tower standing on Piazza dei Consoli amid modern buildings and connected to a historic farmhouse structure. Its stone walls feature battlements at the top and were constructed from tufa blocks with marble fragments embedded throughout.

History

The tower was built in the 14th century but replaced an earlier structure from the Roman Republican period. This layering of construction shows how the site remained occupied and developed over many centuries.

Culture

The tower takes its name from a 12th-century landowner, and the surrounding area still reflects its connection to an ancient residential property. Walking around the structure reveals how this medieval building sits within layers of older history.

Practical

The tower is located in a district with good public transportation access, as several bus and metro stations serve the area nearby. The structure stands directly on Piazza dei Consoli, making it easy to locate and reach on foot.

Did you know?

Excavations around the tower have uncovered burial inscriptions and marble remnants pointing to an ancient Roman villa beneath and near the site. These findings reveal that the ground holds multiple layers of ancient occupation within and surrounding this area.
