Catacombs of Marcellinus and Peter

The catacombs extend across three underground levels with 4.5 kilometers of tunnels containing thousands of burial niches carved into the soft tufa rock.

During the persecution of 304 CE, Saints Marcellinus and Peter were forced to dig their own graves before their execution, leading to their burial at this location.

The walls display numerous frescoes from the 2nd to 5th centuries, including biblical scenes of Moses, Adam and Eve, and Christ with Saints Peter and Paul.

Visitors can access the catacombs through guided tours at specific hours five days per week, with scheduled visits at 10:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:00, and 16:00.

Recent excavations between 2004 and 2010 revealed 20,000 skeletons preserved in various burial methods, including individual niches, arched recesses, and burial chambers.
