Messina Cathedral, Norman-era cathedral in Messina, Italy
The cathedral features a Gothic portal, three apses, and perimeter walls that frame its enormous marble structure within the historic city center.
The original structure, consecrated in 1197 in the presence of Emperor Henry VI and Queen Constance, endured multiple reconstructions due to earthquakes and fires.
The cathedral houses a collection of 400 artworks, including the Golden Mantle of the Virgin of the Letter created by Florentine goldsmiths between 1661 and 1668.
The cathedral remains open to visitors daily, with guided tours available to explore the architectural elements and the astronomical clock in the bell tower.
The bell tower contains the largest astronomical clock in the world, installed in 1933 by the Ungerer company of Strasbourg.
