Fountain of Orion, Renaissance fountain in Piazza Duomo, Messina, Italy.

The Fountain of Orion is a marble structure in Piazza Duomo featuring a twelve-sided base with statues representing four rivers and a central pyramid rising through three circular basins. Water flows from the lower sections upward through this vertically organized composition of geometric and sculptural forms.

Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli, a student of Michelangelo, designed this fountain in 1553 to commemorate the completion of Messina's first municipal water system. The work symbolized the city's progress, transforming a practical engineering achievement into a monument of civic pride.

The fountain displays Orion, Messina's legendary founder, accompanied by his dog Sirius, positioned above spheres supported by cherubs riding dolphins. This imagery links the city's foundational myth to classical artistic traditions and remains central to local identity.

The fountain sits in the center of Piazza Duomo and remains accessible throughout the day, serving as a natural meeting point and reference landmark for exploring the historic center. Morning hours offer the best lighting for viewing the marble details and appreciating the sculptural forms without crowds.

Four kneeling mermen support the second basin while four water nymphs hold the third level, creating an intricate vertical stack of mythological figures. This combination of mythological supporters and flowing water functions simultaneously as both decoration and hydrostatic engineering.
