Lago Fanaco, lake in Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, Italy
Lago Fanaco is a reservoir in the territory of Castronovo di Sicilia, formed by a dam built across the Platani River. The water stretches about 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) and receives water from surrounding mountains including Serra Leone and Pizzo Lupo.
The reservoir was created between 1951 and 1953 by building a dam across the Platani to collect water from the mountains for use by surrounding communities. The construction changed the local climate and created a new habitat for plants and animals in the region.
The reservoir can be walked around on simple trails that are gentle and accessible for most people, offering views across the landscape. The area is exposed to sun during daytime, especially in warmer months, so bring sun protection and water.
The area is an important stopover for many bird species including lapwings, gulls, ducks, herons and grebes, which can be watched from the shore. Early visitors can hear singing and watch the flight of many species during migration, making it a popular spot for bird watching.
