Bulgheria, Mountain summit in Cilento National Park, Italy.
Bulgheria is a mountain summit in the Cilento area of Campania, rising to around 1,225 meters and made up of limestone formations covered with Mediterranean vegetation. It stands as a distinct mass above the coast and surrounding hills, making it visible from a wide distance.
The mountain takes its name from Bulgarian settlers who established communities near its slopes before the year 500, particularly in the area of today's Celle di Bulgheria. That early presence left a name that has stayed with the whole region ever since.
Local people call this summit the sleeping lioness because its profile, seen from certain angles, resembles a resting lion with its head turned east. Hikers in the area often hear this name from local guides or fellow walkers along the trail.
Hiking routes to the summit start from San Giovanni a Piro, with difficulty varying by trail. Good footwear and enough water are important since the ascent crosses rocky terrain and offers little shelter along the way.
Though it sits inside the Cilento National Park, the mountain draws far fewer visitors than other spots in the area, even in summer. This means that hikers heading to the top often find the trails to themselves for long stretches of the route.
