Santuario Madonna di Novi Velia, Shrine in Novi Velia, Italy.
Santuario Madonna di Novi Velia is a mountain shrine located at 1,705 meters (5,594 feet) above sea level on Monte Gelbison, offering broad views across Cilento, Vallo di Diano, and the Gulf of Salerno. The site is reached either by ancient pilgrim paths on foot or via a carriage road that descends to Novi Velia.
The sanctuary is first documented in 1131 as 'rupis Sanctae Mariae' within the feudal territory of Rofrano. This early record indicates the site was already an important pilgrimage destination during the Middle Ages.
Pilgrims from southern Italy visit the sanctuary especially from late May through October, bringing handcrafted wax figurines and decorated votive candles called 'cente'. This practice reflects a deep connection between local people and Mary's veneration that has been passed down through generations.
The ascent requires different physical effort depending on the route chosen, as visitors can either follow historic walking paths or use the easier carriage road. Bring sturdy footwear and plenty of water when walking, especially during warmer months.
The wooden statue of Madonna del Monte shows the Virgin with Child in a composition that combines Byzantine artistic elements from the 1300s. This artistic feature makes the figure a valuable example of cultural exchange between Eastern and Western religious traditions.
