Cervati, Mountain summit in Province of Salerno, Italy.
Cervati is the highest summit in the Cilento region, located in the Province of Salerno within the southern Apennines. It sits inside the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, surrounded by forests and limestone ridges.
The mountain took shape through the same tectonic forces that built the southern Apennines over millions of years. Its limestone layers were once seafloor sediments, later pushed upward and folded into the ridges visible today.
On the summit stands a small shrine dedicated to the Madonna della Neve, which draws local pilgrims each year on August 5. The gathering is a tradition deeply rooted in the villages at the foot of the mountain.
The most common starting point for the ascent is the village of Sanza, where marked trails lead to the top. Starting early in the day is a good idea, as the route is long and weather on the upper slopes can change quickly.
The Bussento River rises on the slopes of the mountain and then disappears underground into a limestone cave system shortly after its source. It resurfaces several kilometers away, making it one of the few rivers in Italy that flows underground for a notable stretch.
