Naval Air Station Sigonella, U.S. Navy installation in Lentini, Italy
Naval Air Station Sigonella is a U.S. Navy air base in Lentini, Italy. The installation divides into two areas, with the first containing administrative buildings and housing, while the second holds runways and hangars.
The base emerged in the late 1950s when the United States Navy expanded its operations in the Mediterranean. On June 15, 1959, the station officially opened and has since served as a major hub for air operations in the region.
The name Sigonella comes from a nearby village and links American military presence with Sicilian countryside. Italian and American families meet regularly at community events that take place on both sides of the entry gates.
Access is restricted to authorized military personnel and their dependents, with visitors requiring prior clearance. The installation has a hospital, schools, and housing units that serve the daily needs of stationed personnel.
In October 1985, a hijacked Egyptian aircraft carrying the Achille Lauro attackers landed here. Italian Carabinieri then surrounded the American transport plane and prevented takeoff, leading to diplomatic tension between Rome and Washington.
