Piona Abbey, Medieval abbey in Colico, Italy
The white stone Piona Abbey rises on the Olgiasca peninsula, with its rectangular bell tower marking the eastern shore of Lake Como.
Dating from the 7th century, the monastery expanded in 1138 with a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and received Cistercian monks in 1938.
The square cloister, constructed between 1252 and 1257, features stone columns adorned with plant motifs and religious frescoes depicting saints and seasons.
Visitors can access the abbey daily from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, with guided tours available through advance reservation.
The monks maintain traditional practices by producing medicinal herbs, cosmetics, honey, and liquors following ancient monastic recipes.
