Como–Brunate funicular, Funicular railway in Como, Italy.
The Como-Brunate funicular links the lakeside city of Como with the hilltop town of Brunate through a steep route where the cabins offer open views during the short journey. The system has two stations, one at the lake level and one higher up, with space for passengers of different mobility levels.
This mountain railway was built in the late 19th century and made regular travel between the two places possible for the first time. Since then it has proven reliable and became part of the region's transport history.
The station buildings show traditional Italian railway design from their era, serving as gathering points where locals and visitors meet before the journey over the lake.
The journey takes only a few minutes, so wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. Keep in mind that it gets cooler at the top and the route is very steep, so particular safety rules apply.
The track has an especially steep grade that makes it one of the steepest of its kind in Northern Italy. This extreme slope requires special technical solutions that are noticeable during the ride.
