Orto Botanico dell'Università di Roma "La Sapienza", University botanical garden in Rome, Italy
The Orto Botanico dell'Università di Roma is a botanical garden sprawling across 12 hectares on the slopes of Janiculum Hill. The grounds contain greenhouses, bamboo groves, medicinal plant collections, and sections dedicated to Mediterranean vegetation.
The garden was established in 1883 on the site of the ancient Horti Getae. It incorporates the former gardens of Palazzo Corsini, which once served as a residence for Queen Christina of Sweden.
The Japanese garden section, with its water features and stone arrangements, creates a peaceful retreat within the grounds. Walking through this area, visitors encounter traditional Asian plants set against the Roman landscape.
The garden is located at Largo Cristina di Svezia 24 and is open daily from 9:00 to 18:30. Entry is free for children under 5 and visitors with disabilities.
A germplasm bank on the grounds preserves over 1300 plant species using biotechnological methods. This collection serves as a key node in the Italian Network for Ex Situ Conservation.
