City wall of Florence, Medieval fortification walls in Florence, Italy
The defensive circuit extends over 8500 meters with six meter high walls, incorporating 63 towers and 12 monumental gates across the historic center.
Construction of these walls began in 1285 under architect Arnolfo di Cambio, taking 48 years to complete as Florence's population grew from 25,000 to 100,000 inhabitants.
Each city gate displayed religious frescoes of Madonna and Saints, with squares featuring statues of notable Florentine writers and poets at their entrances.
Visitors can explore the remaining sections in Oltrarno district, starting from Porta San Niccolò and following Via Belvedere to Forte Belvedere and Porta Romana.
The walls included a moat system fed by the Mugnone river, making it one of the most advanced defensive structures in medieval Europe.
