Abbazia di San Niceta

Abbazia di San Niceta is a Romanesque abbey with a rectangular hall covered by barrel vaulting, accessible through a square choir area with an adjoining sacristy space. Inside, visitors can view painted triptych panels on the left wall depicting various saints.

The abbey was founded in 1167 and managed by Basilian monks during its early years. Later, the spaces were altered, as shown by Gothic arches and hidden windows that were added over the original architecture.

The interior walls show decorative elements from the 14th century that reflect how local artistic traditions evolved over time. Visitors can discover old paintings that reveal how the artistic style changed across the centuries.

Visitors should expect uneven floors and dim lighting inside, so taking time to look around carefully is recommended. It helps to let your eyes adjust so you can fully appreciate the painted details on the walls and panels.

The choir wall contains frescoes from the 16th century showing religious scenes like the Crucifixion with Mary and John. These works are notable because they survived in this rural setting and provide insights into the religious art of that era.
