Abbazia di San Niceta

The church features a rectangular hall with barrel vaulting, accessed through a square presbytery measuring 3.20 by 3.20 meters with an adjoining rectangular sacristy.

The construction of Abbazia di San Niceta began in 1167 under Tancred of Hauteville, with Basilian monks managing the religious establishment during its early years.

The interior walls display vegetative motifs from the 14th century and Gothic arches that conceal original windows, representing the evolution of Salentine art.

The abbey remains open for visitors who can view three painted triptychs on the left wall depicting Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Paul, and Saint Nicholas.

The choir wall contains frescoes dated 1563 showing religious scenes, including the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist.
