Colle Fauniera, Mountain pass in Province of Cuneo, Italy.
Colle Fauniera is a mountain pass in the Cottian Alps standing at approximately 2,480 meters, connecting Valle Grana with Vallone dell'Arma. The road spans roughly 46 kilometers from Demonte to Ponte Marmora and includes narrow and winding sections throughout its course.
The pass earned its alternative name 'Colle dei Morti' following a 1744 battle in which French and Spanish soldiers fell during a surprise attack by Savoyard forces. This battle remains part of the pass's local history and naming tradition.
A monument at the summit honors cyclist Marco Pantani for his remarkable performance during the 1999 Giro d'Italia. The pass has become a destination for cyclists who want to follow the same challenging route.
The road is typically open from July through September, as heavy snow closes it during winter months. Be prepared for narrow and steep curves, and exercise extra caution during poor weather conditions.
The local council renamed the pass as 'Colle Pantani', making it the first mountain pass named after a professional cyclist. This renaming reflects the importance of cycling heritage at this location.
