Mamertine Prison, Ancient prison at Roman Forum, Italy
The Mamertine Prison contains two distinct chambers, with an upper level and a lower dungeon carved into the Capitoline Hill stone foundation.
King Ancus Marcius ordered the construction of this detention facility in the 7th century BC, making it one of the earliest prisons in Rome.
The prison holds religious importance as the presumed location where Saints Peter and Paul were held before their executions under Roman authority.
The entrance to the archaeological site is through the church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami, located at the northern edge of the Roman Forum.
A spring in the lower chamber, known as Tullianum, reportedly emerged when Saint Peter baptized his guards Processus and Martinianus.
