Castello a Mare, Medieval fortress in La Cala, Palermo, Italy
The castle features a Norman round tower, fortified gates, and Renaissance star-shaped defensive structures at the entrance of Palermo's harbor.
Built in the 9th century during Arab rule, the fortress underwent major expansions under Norman king Roger II to control and defend the port.
The castle served as the Sicilian seat of the Inquisition Tribunal between 1553 and 1601, marking a period of religious authority in the region.
Access to explore the archaeological remains requires navigation through Via Roma or the Teatro Massimo district, following Via Cavour toward the coast.
The fortress maintained its drinking water supply through a qanat system, using underground channels to transport water from distant sources.
