Lago di Cavazzo, Natural lake in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy
Lago di Cavazzo is a natural lake located in Friuli-Venezia Giulia between the municipalities of Cavazzo Carnico, Bordano, and Trasaghis. The water is surrounded by wooded areas and open shorelines with designated zones for swimming, camping, and recreational use.
The lake formed after glacial retreat during the ice age shaped the surrounding landscape. This geological process created the basin that holds the water today.
The Atlantis Project in the late 1960s brought twelve aquanauts to live underwater at 17 meters depth for a month, conducting scientific research.
A walking path circles the entire lake with multiple access points and areas for water activities. Visitors will find picnic spots, swimming zones, and boat docks throughout the shoreline.
The southern shoreline contains extensive reed beds where pike, eels, and freshwater fish species thrive in their natural habitat. This area also serves as a breeding ground for birds such as kingfishers and mallards.
