Riserva naturale del Lago di Cornino, Regional nature reserve in Province of Udine, Italy.
Riserva naturale del Lago di Cornino is a protected nature reserve located at the southeastern edge of Prealpi Carniche, covering 487 hectares with varied habitats including woodlands and gravel beds. The reserve contains diverse plants and animal species adapted to this mountain environment.
The reserve was established in September 1996 to protect local wildlife and mountain ecosystems in this region. This designation marked the beginning of organized conservation efforts for the area's natural features.
The area preserves traditional shepherd structures called stavoli that show how people have long lived with the mountains. You can still see these buildings scattered across the landscape, reflecting the connection between local communities and their natural surroundings.
Visitors can join educational excursions, workshops, and guided tours to learn about the local plants, animals, and conservation work. It is best to wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for the mountain weather conditions in this area.
The reserve is home to a breeding colony of around 150 griffon vultures with wingspans of about 2.80 meters, sustained at a dedicated feeding site. These impressive birds of prey are uncommon to observe and draw the attention of wildlife watchers from far away.
