Visentium, Archaeological site near Lake Bolsena, Italy.
Visentium is an archaeological site on Monte Bisenzio, a hill on the southwest shore of Lake Bolsena in central Italy. The hilltop served as the settlement core, while several burial grounds are scattered to the southeast, west, and northwest of it.
The site was continuously occupied from around the 10th to the 5th century BC, making it one of the older known settlements on Lake Bolsena. Excavations carried out in the 1880s uncovered burial fields that confirmed how long people had lived here without interruption.
The burial grounds at Visentium have yielded pottery, jewelry, and everyday tools that show how people here lived and worked. The objects also point to connections with other communities around the lake, suggesting regular exchange and contact.
The terrain around Monte Bisenzio varies from gentle to steep slopes, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before setting out. The burial grounds are spread across the hill in different directions, so allow enough time to move between them.
The archaeological layers at Visentium show that the water level of Lake Bolsena changed noticeably over the centuries, pushing people to adjust where and how they lived. This makes the site one of the few places where environmental change and human adaptation can both be read directly from the ground.
