Populonia, Archaeological site in Piombino, Italy

Located at 170 meters above sea level, Populonia extends across the northern slopes of Monte Massoncello, overlooking the Mediterranean Bay of Baratti.

The Etruscan settlement, established around 900 BC, developed into a metal production center processing copper and iron ore from the island of Elba.

The archaeological park contains numerous Etruscan tombs, revealing artifacts from the Villanovan period through Roman times, including bronze items and pottery.

Visitors can explore both the medieval fortress built with Etruscan stones and the archaeological remains spread across 2.5 kilometers of city walls.

The metal processing activities at Populonia generated such quantities of slag that the accumulation transformed the coastline and led to the site's abandonment.
