Piombino, Port city in Tuscany, Italy
Piombino is a port city in the Province of Livorno on the Tuscan coast, located on a promontory along the Tyrrhenian Sea. The town stretches along the shoreline facing Elba and includes both industrial districts and natural Mediterranean vegetation zones.
The area was settled by the Etruscans and later grew into a fortified medieval town. During the Second World War, the town received the Gold Medal for Military Valor for its role in the resistance.
The Co-Cathedral of Sant'Antimo was completed in 1377 and shows the stone facade typical of Pisan-Gothic architecture. Visitors can step inside to see the medieval church interiors and observe the construction methods of that period.
The port connects the town year-round with Elba, Sardinia, and other Mediterranean destinations. Ferries run daily, with the crossing to Elba taking around one hour.
The Piazza Bovio sits on a cliff directly above the water and offers views across three different bodies of water. From this square, you can see the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Ligurian Sea, and the Channel of Piombino at the same time.
