Piazza Giovanni Bovio

Piazza Giovanni Bovio is a public square in Piombino located on a natural terrace at the tip of the town's promontory. Transparent markers identify the Tuscan islands visible from this vantage point, including Elba, Giglio, and Montecristo.

The current square was created in the 1920s by demolishing the Rocchetta, an eleventh-century fortification built on ancient Etruscan foundations. This fortress had previously occupied the site before the space was opened up.

The square is named after an Italian politician and features a colorful marble wind rose that draws visitors together. People use this open space to watch maritime activity and gather as a community hub.

From this square, visitors can easily access nearby restaurants, the Viale del Popolo main street, and follow the coastal promenade for several kilometers. The area is welcoming and well-organized, with clear pathways and good accessibility throughout.

On clear days, visitors can see the shores of Corsica from this vantage point, creating views that extend across three nations. This makes the location exceptional for observing land features far beyond the immediate Tuscan islands.
