Scuola Grande dei Carmini, Baroque art museum and confraternity building in Campo Santa Margherita, Venice, Italy.
The Scuola Grande dei Carmini is a Baroque building with a white Istrian stone facade overlooking Campo Santa Margherita in the Dorsoduro district. Inside are multiple rooms with elaborate decorations, including a capitular hall with painted woodwork and religious artworks.
The confraternity was founded in 1594 and relocated to its current site in 1627, later receiving the status of Scuola Grande in 1767. This recognition made it one of the most important institutions of its kind in Venice.
The building served as a gathering place for wealthy merchants and craftspeople who came together for prayer and mutual aid. You can still see how the spaces were designed to accommodate these social and religious gatherings.
The building sits directly on the square, making it easy to reach on foot with good visibility from the pathways around Dorsoduro. Visitors should note that stairs lead into the interior and most artworks are located upstairs.
The archive rooms contain intricate wooden carvings with figurative ornaments and wall paintings depicting biblical scenes. These details are often overlooked because most visitors focus on the ceiling paintings.
