Höchster Hütte, Mountain hut at 2560 meters in Ulten Valley, Italy
Höchster Hütte is a mountain refuge at 2560 meters in Ulten Valley in South Tyrol, located next to Grünsee Lake. The building offers accommodation and shelter with 65 beds plus a separate winter room containing four sleeping spaces.
The refuge was founded in 1909 by the Höchst section of DuOeAV and relocated 50 meters higher in 1957 to make way for dam construction. In 1977 it passed to the management of CAI Milan.
The refuge takes its Italian name Rifugio Canziani to honor Umberto Canziani, a founding member who died during World War I. The hut sits in a space where climbers and hikers from different regions gather around the lake.
The refuge operates from mid-June through October and provides direct access to multiple hiking trails in the surrounding mountain landscape. Visitors should bring proper footwear and weather-resistant clothing, as conditions can change quickly at this elevation.
The refuge serves as a starting point for glacier expeditions targeting several peaks above 3000 meters. Many climbers use it as a base for challenging high-altitude mountaineering routes in this region.
