Köllkuppe

Köllkuppe, also known as Cima Marmotta, is a prominent peak in the Ortler Alps standing at about 3,330 meters within the Stilfser Joch National Park. The summit straddles the border between South Tyrol and Trentino, and several mountain huts below provide base points for climbing attempts.

Cartographer Julius Payer and mountain guide Johann Pinggera made the first ascent on September 24, 1867, climbing the southwest ridge from Hohenfernerjoch. This early conquest was part of the broader exploration of the Ortler Alps during the 1800s.

The mountain received its name from Lois Köll, a mountaineer who dedicated his life to exploring and documenting the Alpine region from 1886 to 1963.

Climbers can begin their ascent from either the Zufallhütte at roughly 2,265 meters or the Marteller Hütte at roughly 2,610 meters. Both approaches require glacier equipment and solid alpine climbing experience.

Three distinct ridges converge at the summit, marking the exact point where South Tyrol and Trentino meet. This geographic junction makes the climb to the top a special crossing point between two territories.
