Careser Glacier, Alpine glacier in Ortles-Cevedale region, Italy
The Careser Glacier is located on the southern slopes of the Ortles-Cevedale range and spans a relatively flat terrain at elevations between roughly 2880 and 3270 meters. The ice sheet covers an expansive area with varying thicknesses and displays several features typical of high mountain glaciers.
The glacier has been systematically monitored since the late 19th century, making it part of one of Italy's longest continuous glacier observation programs. This scientific documentation allowed researchers to track significant changes in the ice mass over more than a century.
The Committee for Glaciology of Trentino conducts research expeditions to measure and document the changes in this significant Alpine formation.
The site is in a high alpine location that requires proper preparation and mountaineering equipment for access. Visitors should inform themselves about local weather conditions and alpine hazards before heading to this remote mountain region.
Records since 1967 show accelerated ice loss, with annual decreases that have intensified significantly in recent decades. This data represents one of the most valuable long-term scientific series in the European Alps and documents dramatic changes in high alpine ice.
