Giardino Botanico Alpinia, Alpine garden in Stresa, Italy.
Giardino Botanico Alpinia is a mountain plant garden at 800 meters elevation with over 1,000 different plant species from alpine and subalpine zones. The garden spreads across roughly four hectares of land with pathways between different plant groupings.
The garden was founded in 1934 and originally bore the name Duxia before it received its current name. It was created by two individuals who wanted to build a collection of mountain plants at this special location.
The garden displays plants native to alpine regions, including species such as Artemisia and Campanula that visitors encounter in great variety here. This collection helps people understand and appreciate the plant life found in mountain areas.
The garden is reached by a cable car that runs from the lakeside, departing from Lido di Carciano up the mountain. The best time to visit is during warm months when the paths are dry and plants are actively growing.
The garden also houses plants from distant regions such as the Caucasus, China, and Japan. This international collection shows how many mountain plants worldwide need similar conditions and can grow together.
