Sacro Monte di Belmonte

Sacro Monte di Belmonte is a religious shrine situated on a hilltop near Valperga, featuring thirteen chapels arranged in a ring around a central sanctuary. The complex spreads across a large area with marked pathways that guide visitors through the devotional route.

Construction began in 1712 under Michelangelo de Montiglio, who established eight chapels in the initial phase. The project was later expanded with additional structures to create the complex seen today.

The chapels contain sculptures and frescoes that tell stories from the Rosary and Catholic faith. These artworks remain central to how pilgrims and visitors experience the site today.

Visitors will find well-marked pathways throughout the complex that make navigation straightforward and accessible. Comfortable footwear is recommended since the terrain is hilly and some sections of the route involve steeper inclines.

Archaeological evidence indicates human settlement on the hilltop dating back to ancient times before Christianity. This ancient past suggests the site held importance long before the chapels were built.
