Castello di Rivara, Medieval castle and modern art museum in Rivara, Italy.

Castello di Rivara is a complex of three independent buildings on a hill in Rivara, about 30 km from Turin in the Canavese valleys: the medieval castle (upper castle), the neo-baroque villa (lower castle) and the stables, set in a park of over 45,000 m². The upper castle, built in the 12th century by the Counts of Valperga, faces the road to the mountains; the lower castle, built in the 13th century by the Counts Discalzi, faces the plain.

The upper castle was built in the 12th century by the Counts of Valperga, and the lower castle in the 13th century by the Counts Discalzi. After the Discalzi died out in the early 14th century, both passed to the Valperga. In 1339 the upper castle was burned and rebuilt, and a wall was built around the village. In 1871 Carlo Ogliani bought the complex and had Alfredo D'Andrade restore it.

The complex is known as the "castle" of Rivara, but it consists of two separate fortresses: the upper castle, built in the 12th century by the Counts of Valperga, and the lower castle, built in the 13th century by the Counts Discalzi. Since 1981 it has hosted contemporary art exhibitions and artists' residencies, continuing the tradition of the Rivara School painters who gathered here from 1860.

The complex stands in Rivara, about 30 km from Turin in the Canavese valleys, and is reached by road. The park covers more than 45,000 m² across the hill, so allow time to walk between the medieval castle, the neo-baroque villa and the stables. The castle has been closed since the deaths of Franz Paludetto and his son Davide Paludetto.

The castle's contemporary art collection grew from Franz Paludetto's direction after 1985, when the abandoned complex became an exhibition centre and museum. Artists who left work or traces at Rivara include Gordon Matta-Clark, Dan Graham, Candida Höfer, Hermann Nitsch and Maurizio Cattelan, alongside Paul McCarthy and Charles Ray.
