Castello di Valperga, Medieval castle and art museum in Valperga, Italy
Castello di Valperga is a medieval castle and art museum featuring a rectangular entrance tower with circular towers in its central section. A neoclassical facade was added in 1807 during a major renovation that substantially expanded the original structure.
The initial fortified structure was built at the end of the 11th century by the Silvesco and Droengo families at the base of a granite hill. Over centuries it underwent several modifications, gradually taking on the form we see today through numerous rebuilding phases.
The Dance Hall displays frescoes from different eras, showing how artistic styles changed between the 15th and 18th centuries. These layered works reveal the tastes and techniques favored by each generation that occupied the rooms.
The medieval section is currently undergoing restoration while the 19th-century section operates as a healthcare facility. Check ahead about which areas are accessible to visitors, as this may change depending on ongoing restoration work.
The castle grounds feature La Rotonda, a baroque burial chapel with a hollow base that visitors can walk through. This passageway runs directly beneath the chapel as part of the original cobblestone route to nearby Belmonte.
