Karersee, Alpine lake in Welschnofen, Italy
Karersee sits at 1519 meters altitude at the base of the Latemar massif and extends 300 meters in length. The water displays green and yellow hues that shift depending on the light throughout the day.
Empress Elisabeth of Austria visited the Grand Hotel Carezza in 1897 and walked the surrounding trails. The Elisabethpromenade was then created and still runs along the shore today.
The Ladin population named it 'Lec de Ergobando', meaning rainbow lake, due to the water's shifting colors attributed to local myths.
The visitor center offers two bistros serving South Tyrolean food and provides access without barriers. The site opens from 9 AM to 5 PM in winter and features orientation signs along the shore paths.
Underground springs from the Latemar massif feed the lake and cause water levels to vary by up to 22 meters depending on the season. This natural cycle changes the appearance of the shoreline considerably throughout the year.
