Temple of the Olympian Zeus

The Temple of Olympian Zeus features enormous stone blocks, sections of columns, and fragments of capitals spread across a foundation measuring 56 by 113 meters.

Construction began in 488 BC under Theron's rule following the Greeks' victory over Carthaginians at Himera, using captured enemies as workers to build the structure.

The eastern pediment displayed scenes of Gigantomachy while the western side depicted the fall of Troy, representing Greek military achievements through architectural decoration.

The temple ruins remain accessible to visitors within the archaeological park of Valle dei Templi, with guided tours available throughout the day.

Stone giants called Telamons, measuring 7.65 meters in height, were positioned between columns to support the temple's upper structure instead of traditional free-standing pillars.
