Le Roncole, human settlement in Busseto, Province of Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Le Roncole is a small hamlet belonging to the municipality of Busseto, in the province of Parma, set on the flat land of the Po Plain. The settlement consists of scattered houses and farmsteads grouped around a church, with fields stretching out in every direction.
Le Roncole grew during the Middle Ages as a farming settlement on the Po Plain, following the same pattern as many other villages in the area. In the 19th century it became known beyond the region when a child born there went on to shape the world of opera.
The name Le Roncole comes from a Latin word referring to thorny fields that once covered this flat stretch of land. The church still sits at the center of daily life, and the farmsteads around it follow a rhythm that has changed little over the centuries.
A car is the most practical way to visit Le Roncole, as the houses are spread out and public transport connections are very limited. The hamlet is close to Busseto, so both can easily be visited on the same trip.
Giuseppe Verdi was born in Le Roncole in 1813, and the house where he spent his early years still stands in the hamlet. It is one of the few birthplaces of a major opera composer that can be visited in such a small and remote setting.
