Timpone della Motta, Archaeological site and museum in Francavilla Marittima, Italy.
Timpone della Motta is an archaeological complex on a hilltop rising about 280 meters above sea level, overlooking the flat coastal plain of Sibari. Excavations reveal the remains of three temples spanning from the Bronze Age through the period of Greek settlement by colonists from Sybaris.
The location began as a settlement in the Middle Bronze Age and later developed into an important acropolis under Oenotrian influence. Greek colonists from Sybaris brought new building techniques and religious practices that fundamentally transformed the site.
The site displays religious practices of early Greek settlers through temple remains and sacred objects uncovered during excavations. These artifacts show how people in this period honored their gods and what rituals took place in the temples.
Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as the hillside is steep and paths can be uneven. The best time to climb is in early morning or late afternoon when the sun is less intense.
The discovery of hydriskai vessels, special containers for water transport, was crucial in identifying this location as the ancient city of Lagaria. These ceramic vessels reveal the importance of water and trade in this early society.
