Monte Sparviere

Monte Sparviere is a summit reaching around 1,700 meters that sits on the border between Basilicata and Calabria in southern Italy. The peak lies within Pollino National Park and features multiple hiking routes that move through varied terrain and elevation zones.

The mountain takes its name from a hawk species that has nested in the Apennine range for centuries. This connection to the birds shaped how the place became known to people living in the region.

A small chapel on the slope hosts a celebration for Madonna dello Sparviere that brings locals together during summer. This sacred site marks how the mountain remains woven into the spiritual life of nearby communities.

Hiking trails can be accessed from a nearby town situated at a short distance from the mountain base. The best time to visit is during warmer months when snow has melted from the higher reaches.

An alpine lake on the mountainside fills with water from snowmelt in late spring. This seasonal water body emerges as the snow vanishes, creating a temporary feature at high altitude.
