Ottagono Ca’ Roman, Military fort in Venice Lagoon, Italy.
Ottagono Ca' Roman is an octagonal fort built on a small rocky island in the Venetian Lagoon, close to Pellestrina. The site is made up of stone defensive walls, casemates, and other military structures spread across the island.
The fort was first built by the Republic of Venice to guard the southern entrance to the lagoon, then expanded during Austrian rule. It served as an active military post through both World Wars before being abandoned after 1945.
The fort takes its name from the nearby locality of Ca' Roman on Pellestrina island. Visitors can still read the octagonal shape of the structure from the outside, as it defines the whole layout of the site.
The island can only be reached by boat, most easily from Pellestrina. Much of the site is in poor condition, so sturdy footwear is a good idea and careful footing is needed throughout the visit.
A round concrete platform survives at the center of the site, where heavy artillery was positioned during the Second World War. This addition shows how the old stone fort was adapted to modern warfare without changing its original layout.
