Fort San Felice, Military fort in Chioggia, Italy
Fort San Felice is a star-shaped fortification guarding the entrance to the Venetian lagoon with multiple buildings enclosed within its ramparts. The structure sits at a strategic point to defend the harbor of Chioggia.
Construction began in 1538 to protect the lagoon from attacks. Significant upgrades were completed in 1806 under French control to strengthen the defense system.
The entrance gate designed in 1704 features ionic columns in Istrian stone and gives the fortress an imposing appearance. This portal remains the first thing visitors notice when approaching the fortification.
The fort can be reached by road from Marghera via SS309 heading toward Chioggia. After parking on Via S. Felice, a short walk brings you to the entrance.
The fort sits on a barena, a typical lagoon semi-submerged terrain. This location has required constant maintenance due to moisture problems affecting the walls.
