Area marina protetta Isola di Ustica

The Area Marina Protetta Isola di Ustica is a marine protected area covering around 16,000 hectares of seabed around the island, home to coral reefs, rocky coastlines, and numerous fish species. The waters are characterized by clear visibility and a diverse underwater landscape that creates varied habitats for marine life.

Established in 1986, this became Italy's first designated marine protected area after local fishermen requested creation of such a zone. The founding marked a turning point in Italy's approach to sea conservation and later inspired similar projects along the country's other coastlines.
