Tomb of the Reliefs

Tomb of the Reliefs, Etruscan tomb in Cerveteri, Italy.

The Tomb of Reliefs is an underground burial chamber carved into stone and decorated with stucco carvings on its interior surfaces. Inside, thirteen burial niches surround a central platform, creating a space designed to hold multiple family members.

This underground tomb was discovered in 1847 within the Banditaccia Necropolis and belonged to the wealthy Matunas family during the fourth century before Christ. The structure demonstrates how elite Etruscans honored and cared for their deceased.

The walls feature carved reliefs showing weapons, household objects, and mythological creatures that reveal how the Etruscan people lived and what they believed. These images provide a window into their daily world and spiritual ideas.

Visitors descend a monumental staircase to reach the main chamber underground. The interior is dimly lit, so allow your eyes time to adjust as you explore the carved walls and niches.

Two distinctive pillars with Aeolian capitals support the ceiling, an unusual architectural choice for Etruscan tombs of this period. The carved images include everyday items like wine jugs and farm tools, offering a rare look at the possessions the family valued enough to take with them.
