Museo Nazionale Archeologico, Archaeological museum in Cerveteri, Italy.

Description

The Museo Nazionale Archeologico in Cerveteri is housed across two levels within the 13th-century Ruspoli Castle and displays artifacts arranged chronologically in exhibition rooms. The collection includes ceramics, amphoras, funerary vessels, and sarcophagus lids excavated from the necropolis of ancient Caere.

History

The museum opened in 1967 to showcase archaeological discoveries from the necropolis of ancient Caere, an important Etruscan settlement. Its collection spans more than a thousand years of this civilization and shows connections with Greek cultures.

Culture

The collection displays items from Etruscan daily life and burial practices, including painted ceramics and decorated stone sarcophagi. These objects show how people in this ancient civilization lived and honored their dead.

Practical

The museum is open from Tuesday through Sunday and occupies accessible levels within the castle building. Plan to spend about two hours exploring the exhibitions at a comfortable pace.

Did you know?

In 2015, the museum acquired the Euphronios Krater and Kylix, two Greek red-figure vessels from the 5th century BC. These pieces represent masterworks of ancient Greek pottery and are among the collection's most prized possessions.
