Abisso di Malga Fossetta

Abisso di Malga Fossetta is a multi-level cave system carved through limestone formations beneath the Asiago plateau. The passages and chambers extend downward over 1000 meters, creating a complex underground network with different openings and vertical drops.

The cave system was discovered in the 1970s by the Grotte Schio Group, sparking decades of extensive exploration and study. This research expanded knowledge of limestone geology throughout the Veneto region.

Local speleologists conduct regular research expeditions to explore the underground structures beneath the plateau. These scientific activities help visitors understand how limestone formations develop and change over time in this region.

Access requires specialized equipment and proper authorization, as this is a technical cave for experienced explorers only. A green metallic marker identifies the winter entrance at approximately 1744 meters elevation, so visitors need to plan accordingly before arrival.

A potential underground connection to the nearby Grotta della Bigonda could make this cave system Italy's deepest at over 1400 meters total depth. This theorized link remains one of the major puzzles in regional speleology.
