Municipal Aquarium, Public aquarium at Piazzale Mascagni, Livorno, Italy

The Municipal Aquarium in Livorno is a public museum building at Piazzale Mascagni that houses thousands of marine animals in different sections. The exhibition is organized into zones, with the Mediterranean section displaying tanks containing fish, rays, sharks, and coral formations found in local waters.

Architect Vittorio Gregotti designed this building in the 1930s, and it opened to the public on June 20, 1937 as a center for marine education. After its opening, it became an important venue for natural science in the city.

The aquarium is named after Giacinto Cestoni, a naturalist who dedicated his life to studying marine life through careful observation. This choice reflects how local scientists contributed to our knowledge of the sea.

The building sits on a busy public square that is easy to reach on foot from the city center. Visitors should know that the rooms are air-conditioned and there are multiple floors to explore, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

The facility has a special pool dedicated to observing and caring for sea turtles before they return to their natural habitat. Visitors can watch the healing and rehabilitation process of these animals in this area.
