Antica Porta San Donato

Antica Porta San Donato is a stone gateway built into the Renaissance walls of the city and features architectural details from the late 16th century. The passage still displays the solid construction of that era with its thick stonework and distinctive opening.

The gate was built in 1590 and served as a city entrance for several decades until a replacement was constructed between 1629 and 1639. This change shows how Lucca's fortifications were updated during the mid-17th century.

The gate bears the name of a saint and sits at a central point where people naturally pass through when entering or leaving the city. Walking through here, you notice how the old entrance still shapes how visitors navigate and experience Lucca today.
