Bagno Balena, Art Nouveau beach establishment in Viareggio, Italy
Bagno Balena is a beach establishment in Art Nouveau style featuring geometric decorations by artist Galileo Chini at the entrance, with lateral openings bordered by faux stone and a barrel vault. The facility includes multiple swimming pools, fitness areas, a restaurant, and direct access to a stretch of sand with water sports options.
The structure was first built in 1874 as a wooden facility and was redesigned in 1928 by architect Alfredo Belluomini following new municipal requirements. This renovation was part of how the beach resort modernized itself.
The building displays late Art Nouveau features through its structural design and decorative details that shape how this beach resort looks today. These elements remain part of what visitors experience when they arrive at the seaside.
The facility is well equipped with everything for swimming and relaxation and sits right on Viareggio's beach. Best visited on days with good weather when water sports activities are also at their best.
The main entrance features two ceramic medallions above the architraves and a central colored glass rosette window set within the vaulted gallery passage. These ceramic details and the glass window exemplify the artisanal touches that distinguish this building.
