Castle of Cervo

The Castle of Cervo is a medieval fortress built on elevated ground above the village with thick stone walls and defensive towers. From these fortifications, views extend across the Ligurian coastline and out toward the sea beyond.

The fortress was built around 1200 under the Marquisate of Clavesana as a defense against maritime threats along the coast. It served as the military center of the region for centuries and shaped how the settlement developed.

The castle forms part of the village core and sits alongside stone buildings that tell the story of how people organized their community for protection. Walking around it reveals how inhabitants used these structures as the center of their social and defensive life.

The castle sits at the village center and is accessible on foot, though the approach involves narrow lanes and steep passages. Wearing sturdy shoes is advisable, and visitors should allow time to explore both the interior and viewing points.

The walls bear visible traces of damage and repairs from different periods, telling the story of recurring conflicts and rebuilding. These layers of history are readable in the stonework and give visitors a direct sense of its long use.
