Castle of Caccuri

The Castle of Caccuri is a medieval fortress on a hillside, marked by a distinctive tower named Torre Mastrigli that rises above the surrounding landscape. The structure preserves various rooms and defensive elements that reflect its long history of use.

The origins trace back to a Byzantine fortress from the 6th century, which was later rebuilt during the medieval period. The structure received its final major renovation in 1885, documenting centuries of change.

The chapel inside holds artworks from the Neapolitan school, reflecting regional artistic traditions that visitors can see while moving through the castle.

Access is via Via Destra in the village, leading to a location best explored during daylight hours to see the interior spaces clearly. The paths on the grounds are uneven and require sturdy footwear.

The collection inside documents the evolution of military architecture in Calabria across different periods. These artifacts show how defensive and building techniques changed over time.
