Established in 1257 as part of the Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala complex, the church underwent major renovations during the late 15th century.

The main altar stands on a raised platform at the end of a broad staircase, offering clear visibility from every position in the nave.
Instead of having an independent facade, the church integrates into the hospital structure with a marble-clad side elevation facing Piazza del Duomo.
