San Giovanni Evangelista, Baroque church in Scicli, Italy
San Giovanni Evangelista is a Baroque church in Scicli with a curved facade divided into three levels and Ionic columns framing the entrance portal. The interior is topped by an elliptical dome and creates a well-proportioned space for worship and visits.
Construction began in 1760 and replaced an earlier structure destroyed by the 1693 earthquake. This earthquake devastated the Val di Noto region and prompted the rebuilding of many churches in the Baroque style.
The interior displays a remarkable Spanish painting from the 17th century showing Christ dressed in white linen. This artwork shapes the visual character of the church space and draws visitors' attention as they move through it.
The church sits on Via Francesco Mormino Penna next to the Municipal Palace and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors can walk up the curved stairs to the facade and explore the interior with its organ and artwork.
A pipe organ from 1841 built by Salvatore Andronico Battaglia from Palermo produces music within the elliptical interior. This handcrafted instrument remains a functioning work of art and adds a special sound quality to services.
