Gesù e Maria

Gesù e Maria, Baroque church on Via del Corso, Rome, Italy

Gesù e Maria is a baroque church on Via del Corso designed with a travertine facade by Carlo Rainaldi. The interior features extensive decorative work overseen by Giorgio Bolognetti, the bishop of Rieti, with altars, chapels, and artworks distributed throughout the space.

Construction of the church began in 1633 under architect Carlo Buzio and was completed in 1635, with consecration to Jesus and Mary following in 1636. This rapid completion within a few years made it a notable achievement of the Roman baroque period.

The main altar displays a painting of the Coronation of the Virgin by Giacinto Brandi, while Giovanni Lanfranco created frescoes near the sacristy entrance. These artworks shape the interior and reflect the baroque artistic tradition that brought together different masters in this church.

The church sits on a busy street in central Rome and is easily accessible on foot from major squares and public transit stops. Visitors should know that religious services shape daily activities, so quiet respect and appropriate dress are expected, particularly during regular mass times.

The interior houses statues of John the Baptist and John the Evangelist by Giuseppe Mazzuoli, positioned in carefully designed niches. These sculptures show the high-quality craftsmanship applied to decorating this place of worship.
